Child & Adolescent Therapy

Therapy for children, teens and families — compassionate, developmentally appropriate support for young clients and their caregivers.

Growing up can be hard — anxiety, depression, identity struggles, trauma, grief, school stress, family conflict or life changes can deeply affect children and adolescents. At Francis Psychotherapy, we provide compassionate, age-appropriate therapy that meets young clients where they are, offering a safe and welcoming environment for them to express feelings, explore challenges, and build resilience. Our approach may include play therapy, narrative therapy, trauma-informed care, and strength-based methods — always adapted to the developmental needs of each child or teen. Where helpful, we can involve families or caregivers to support healing, communication, and relational health. The aim is to help young people feel understood, supported, and empowered — walking alongside them toward emotional wellbeing, healthier coping skills, and stronger family relationships.

What to Expect

  • Acknowledgement that children/youth experience mental health challenges (anxiety, depression, behavioural issues, stress, trauma, identity, grief, family dynamics), and the therapists include children’s mental health and play therapy among their specialties.

  • Use of developmentally appropriate therapy modalities, e.g. play therapy, narrative therapy, trauma-informed care, strength-based approaches — suitable for children and adolescents.

  • Safe, empathetic, non-judgmental environment for children/teens to express themselves, process emotions, explore identity, cope with stress, grief, trauma, family issues, school struggles, etc. As described under individual psychotherapy, but tailored to younger clients.

  • Inclusion of family dynamics and parent or caregiver involvement where helpful (since some therapists handle parenting issues, family therapy, and relational issues).

  • Flexibility: ability to address a variety of issues — mental health symptoms, behavioural issues, grief, trauma, identity/stress, school refusal, parenting challenges, etc. (Given “School Refusal,” “Parenting,” “Children’s Mental Health” are listed among therapy types.)

Who is this for?

  • Children or adolescents dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, identity or racial stress, school difficulties, family issues, behavioural problems, or major life changes.

  • Families seeking therapy for their child/teen, or wanting support for parenting, family relationships, or transitions (divorce, adoption, trauma, loss).

  • Caregivers wanting a trauma-informed, developmentally aware therapist experienced in youth mental health to support their child.
